Gokor Chivichyan at Fang Shen Do's 2012 Fight Camp in Ottawa, Ontario

Students from our 25 locations snatched up the 70 spots to meet and train with Gokor.
Gokor Chivichyan was our guest once again at this year's Fight Camp held at my father's Ottawa, Ontario location.

Students were shown how easy it is to throw your opponent off balance as well as land a submission when you have proper technique.

"If you use your muscles to throw your opponent, you're doing something wrong" ~ Gokor

Sifu Patrick, Gokor Chivichyan and Sibok Martin Patenaude

At 50 yrs of age, Gokor is moving just as fast and smoothly as some of the younger participants.

Here's a quick video I created to see some of what was covered during the camp.

If you haven't purchased our Grappling DVD featuring Gokor, I must say, it's worth every penny. The wealth of information and techniques covered will blow you away. Everything has been captured on 2 full length discs.

You can grab a copy of Fang Shen Do Grappling Series with special guest Gokor Chivichyan here.

Next time make sure to register early so you don't miss out.

Local Fight Circuit a Success

I just finished uploading a new Fight Night Video from our last event in February.

Watch as "first timers" show off their skills and gain the experience they will need to step it up into amateur and pro circuits.

This really is our breeding ground for our up and coming fighters.

Judging the success of our fighters during the past year in various circuits, SFL and Hybrid, notably, our winning formula of starting them out with full protection and 12 oz gloves to an open face and 10 oz gloves is a great way to protect our fighters when climbing the ranks and getting them ready for the Instinct Pro Circuit in Montreal.

Cedric Mongeon leads the way with his pro fight debut in June and quick to follow suit, a stable of a dozen fighters are ready to make the leap later this summer.

"It's very exciting" says Sifu Patrick Marcil, "It's always been our dream to bring a fighter up to the UFC and now judging how it's going, it won't be just one, and our dream is closer than we thought, all this in record time".

Watch the video and let me know what you think, you think some of these guys are going to make it?

Only time will tell.

Cedric Mongeon: Hybrid Super Light Weight Champion

It was a time for celebration last weekend when our very own, Cedric Mongeon won the Super Light Weight title at Hydrid 12 to a crowd of about 1200 fans.

Cedric has been eyeing the belt ever since he started competing in the Hybrid semi-pro circuit back in 2009.

2011 was also a great year for Cedric who also won the Intermediate Division in the Submission Fight
League in Gatineau with its main focus being strictly Grappling.

With the help of his main instructor, Sifu Patrick Marcil, Cedric will continue to sharpen his skills and successfully defend his title in the upcoming Hybrid Promotions.

The Hybrid Circuit is the Farm League for recruiting up and coming talent for the Pro Circuit in Montreal and obviously, turning "Pro" is one of Cedric's goals.

Cedric is only but one of many exciting fighters that will make their appearance on the Hybrid Fight Stage and in various circuits representing the Fang Shen Do System.

We never cared much about competitions over the years, our focus was always on real life-street application but the more we attend these events and meet lots of professional, down to earth people within the Hybrid Organization, the fighters, and the fans, we can't help but continue to push our students to showcase their skills and prove that they belong right up there with the best fighters in the region.

As you'll see in the coming months, there's alot of talent coming out of the Patenaude Fight Team.

Stay tuned for a possible FSD Champ in each division?

We'll see!

Mathieu Lemay: Un bon samaritain au secours d'un voisin

That is the headline on the front page of the "Le Droit" Newspaper yesterday.

On Friday night, one of our students from our Gatineau school was forced to defend a man who was attacked by 3 men armed with baseball bats.

Mathieu who has been training with Sifu Patrick for close to 2 years now was able to rely on the self-defense skills he learned at the school to successfully, knock out and disarm 3 assailants during an altercation that could of turned out for the worse.

Considering the odds, a 3 on 1, Mathieu took excellent care of the situation by putting a stop to their rampage using simple concepts and techniques you learn on your very first class.

Training in a realistic martial art is crucial. Can you imagine what would have been the outcome if Mathieu had no training whatsoever?

Many people have the mentality: "I'll never be attacked"

Do you have that mentality?

It's always a smart thing to prepare yourself for any kind of situation that could put your life or someone's else in danger and have the proper training that will allow you to respond to it successfully. No one is guaranteed a safe passage in this life, always be ready!

Mathieu has a couple of TV interviews today and during the week on TVA and other stations. Will do my best to post more info here on the blog.

Until then here's a link to the story printed online for Le Droit:

You can find it here on the main page of the Fang Shen Do Website.

Scroll down a bit on the right you'll see FSD on Youtube, you can't miss it.

Fight Camp Pics, Finally!

It's unbelievable how fast one month can go by and in a flash we were on our way for a second one when finally my photographer called and said: "They're Ready!"

On June 5 th, we held a special gathering of our MMA/Sanshou Program Students with Special Guest Gokor "The Armenian Assassin" Chivichyan.

The Pagoda was packed and the students absolutely loved it.

Take our already effective fighting style and conditioning program mixed in with Gene LeBell's no. 1 student, Gokor Chivichyan for the ground game and what do you got?

Some serious skills!

I was impressed at how well the students picked up the techniques and the kind of work ethic they all possessed.

And that last quality is so important. Having all the right techniques but having the wrong attitude and no work ethic in your training will get you nowhere.

Speaking of techniques, many were covered during the Camp: Gi, No Gi, in the Cage, From Standing Up, Sanshou, and on and on for 5 straight hours.

Luckily we filmed everything. So if you were present and would like to review everything that was covered or you missed the event and would like to learn some of the techniques that Gokor has kept secret in the past, you'll soon be able to own it on DVD.

Gokor Chivichyan and Patenaude Family

Some of these techniques were only kept for Gokor's top fighters but Gokor felt the time was right to share them and make them available to everyone.

As soon as they're ready I'll make sure to let you know.

Full Contact Stick Fighting

Like the old saying goes:

"If you want to learn to swim you have to jump in the water, no one swims on dry land!"

Learning to move the stick has many hidden benefits that translate well to other areas of your martial art training.

Testing what you know is inevitable and doing it Full Contact Style purges your memory bank.

In a matter of seconds you have no choice but to use what works and discard (purge) what doesn't.

Doing this on a regular basis definitely gives you an edge and allows you to move and flow naturally without feeling held back.

The idea is to keep flowing, attacking and letting no fear stop you.

You can do this the hard way with stick fighting and a few bruises or you can do it the soft easy way...

Join us tomorrow in Montreal for an experience you'll never forget.

After you're through with the seminar, you'll never let anything stop you ever again whether it's fear, confidence issues, uncertainty, lack of vision, or failure to follow through.

Join Sijo (our founder), myself and a huge group of people this Saturday and permanently turn fear into power.

*Warning* This session is dynamic, highly motivating and carries a high risk of permanent behavior change to get you to dream big, accept nothing less than the best and attract everything you really want out of life.

We call it Focus on Results and it's happening at 3 pm tomorrow at my St-Denis School.

You can register here.

2010 World Kobudo Convention

This year's World Kobudo Convention was held on Canadian soil.

Levis, Quebec to be exact.

A great chance for us to meet new people, train students from other arts and show the attributes of Fang Shen Do training.

What we hear alot is: "Speed"

"You guys are fast!?", "Did you see that?", "Quick but also powerful", "That looks really cool".

If you had a chance to catch a glimpse of our demo during that event you'll understand a bit more. If not, follow this link after you've checked the pics below.

My father, Sijo J. Patenaude, Hanshi J. Therien and my brother Sifu S. Patenaude. We're always very careful to watch who we associate with and World Kobudo is a professional, well organized event with a common goal of spreading the practice of martial arts and using it to better one's self.

Naturally, it was a perfect match.

Working knife defenses with Shock Knives. 1200 volts of pain for a wrong move. Better watch out!

Working with these quickly separates fiction from reality. Hard to stay serious when working with flappy, rubber knives or wooden ones.

Being touched by a shock knife feels like a real cut to the bone, there's no room for error.

Sifu Silvain Patenaude and Sifu Alain Garofalo working energy drills with Kris Swords during Saturday night's demonstration.

Working Chi Sao with a padded opponent gives more freedom
and realism to your attacks.

Chi Sao is a game in which both partners use each other's energy or weaknesses to setup attacks, traps and take downs.

This allows the student to practice safely while respecting the rules and at the same time, gives him a platform to practice any technique he so pleases spontaneously and creatively.

Sifu Stephane Patenaude coming up to his feet after a throw, Sanshou style.

Sanshou is a mix of strikes, kicks, and throws unique to Kung-Fu Stylists. If we were to compare it to something, it's a mix of Boxing, Kickboxing, Muay Thai and Judo.

One must train Full Contact Stick Fighting as soon as you feel proficient. This time varies from one student to another but eventually everyone builds up the confidence to undertake this high action, adrenaline punch.

Sanshou is about timing, speed, power and flow.
As soon as your opponent makes a mistake, payment is a throw or being knocked off balance for points.

Students could choose where they wanted to go with over 15 seminars being taught simultaneously. Attendance at our workshops concluded the level of interest and intrigue when it came to learning the finer points of Fang Shen Do.

What students liked the most was our level of enthusiasm. Nobody likes to be taught by an unmotivated, unskilled instructor.

Our teaching style is hands on, dynamic and fun.

And above all, approachable, respectful and gets you at ease immediately.

Sijo, our founder, going through the finer details of Spring Phon Sao.

Another platform we use to develop speed, sensitivity and power.

Most of these drills are never practiced by other arts which is a shame. The benefits that derive from them are extensive.

At the core and in the end every art deals with energy. To neglect this piece of the puzzle is completely missing the boat.

Imagine how much better you would be to throw, submit and lift your opponent if you only had 6 mths of Phon Sao training.

We all want to have fun. When your partner is patient and both of you are loose and relaxed, learning is easy and concepts sink in effortlessly.

No matter what, never be a "learnt" man (or woman), every person you meet is superior to you in one way or the other. Always be a learner, pay attention and listen. This is one of the secrets to success.

Respect.

This quality reigns in all good schools. Judge a school by it's students. How they talk, how they act, how they sit, how they interact with each other, then you'll know their instructor without even meeting him.

Most of the energy drills must be done one on one.

Although this process is a bit longer, the student's progression is greatly accelerated.

Modeling is still by far the quickest way to acquire what it is you want.

If you want something, find someone that already has what you want and repeat what they do exactly.

Finding ways to sneek in and control the opponent's head is a wise decision.

Where the head goes the body follows.

An important principle that students are taught almost immediately if you're going to have any kind of success manipulating your opponent.

Trapping hands is a drill you do to get comfortable standing up close to your opponent.

This way if you ever find yourself there you won't be intimidated.

Through sense of touch you acquire intuition.

Developing this sense makes you more receptive and aware of your body. Once totally aware, you can make your body do whatever you ask it to do.

There are several hundred pictures still left to upload. Check back regularly for updates.

FSD Training Day a Success!

Well, as always, this year's event was bigger and better than last year. An amazing turnout, informative workshops and focused participants, what else could you ask for?

With so many things happening all at once it was special for us but also for the students to have an awesome, out of the ordinary Saturday afternoon. A big THANK YOU to the students and people who got involved to make this event a success!

Here are a couple of snapshots from the event. Enjoy!

Sifu Christine Patenaude teachign women how to defend themselves

My sister, Sifu Christine, also had a chance to work one on one with the women of FSD.

Women's Self-Defense and Women's Fitness are 2 of her specialties. No one's going to mess with this group!

Sifu Patrick Marcil Sanshou Sparring Drills

Sifu Patrick running through our Sanshou Drills. Integrating our Street, No rules Self-Defense System in a sport like Kickboxing was no easy task but with the success of our fighters in various competitions recently, they have shown the transition to be seamless and quite successful.

Fang Shen Do Kung-Fu Olympics for Kids

Events like this are great for kids. A major confidence booster. Offering the right guidance as well as building leadership skills is what real martial arts is all about.

Fang Shen Do Training Day

Seeing so many people take fitness and health so seriously makes me really happy. Mastering the body and mind should be on everyone's priority list.

Sifu Christine Patenaude Warrior Fitness and Women's Self-Defense

With the right instructor learning is fun and informative. Actually doing the techniques is easy and makes you realize "You can do this too!"

Sibok Martin Patenaude Stick Training

Spending some time teaching elements of the stick through the various ranges and what can be done in each of them opens your mind to the endless possibilities.

Fang Shen Do Grappling Tournament

A Few Announcements

I wanted to keep you up to date on what's happening at Fang Shen Do Central this January.

Tonight is our Sanshou Qualifier in Gatineau (518 Maloney Blvd).

Fighters who wish to participate in the February 6th Fight Night need to be present.

We're simultaneously holding a Sanshou Seminar and Training with Sifus, Stephane and Patrick at the cost of 20$. Training starts at 7:30 pm.

Secondly, it's Board Breaking Time!

"Boards don't hit back!", I know, but there's something about breaking stuff that just gives you a rush and added determination to see your goals through. Like we're taught by our founder: regret, fear, and worry hits back!

So go to the source of what might be stopping you and crush it like you do the board.

See your instructor for details (if you're a member) if not, send me an e-mail and I'll give you the details on how you can participate.

That's all for now,

Master Yourself,

Sibok M

I've just recently set up the Fang Shen Do Kung-Fu Channel on You Tube.

If you would like to subscribe to our channel and also view a demo I just uploaded you can click on this link: Fang Shen Do Demonstration

It doesn't have any sound for copyright issues but originally this demo was done to the sound of Static-X's "Get to the Gone". A completely Free-Style Demo with no preparation, the way we like to do them!

Play the song while watching for added pleasure.

Enjoy.

Sibok M

P.S. If you still haven't started your martial art training I encourage you to take advantage of our VIP Pass offered on the website. Find the school nearest you, then fill out the short form and hit "Sign Me Up".

Training with Rob Kaman

What's better than training with Rob Kaman?

"Having my brothers there to train with as well!"

During the week where I trained with Rob Kaman, the rest of my family were also in LA.

It was nice to finally see all of them and reunite under the California sun.

Although their stay was brief I got them training with some of the people I've been telling you about.

Rob just opened a new gym along side Rigan Machado and we were actually the first group of guys to do a class in it.

Pretty cool huh?

Rob's private training with us mirrored alot of the Fang Shen Do philosophy and what we teach in our adult sparring/sanshou classes.

Aggressive. Nothing fancy. To the point. Efficient.

Sprinkled with alot of humour.

He found it interesting to hear about the Patenaude story and how our whole family trains together in martial arts.

With over 100 fights, the biggest feet I've ever seen on a man (which could easily kick through a wall) and currently training BJ Penn on his stand up game, Rob's tips on how to demolish your opponent and the kind of preparation that goes into getting ready for a competition were priceless.

Collectively, one of our favourite classes to date because of the similarities with FSD and a chance to train together after so long might be rivaled by another trainer we'll be working with next.

Stay Tuned,

Master Yourself,

Sibok M
